Landscaping crew jobs in Frisco: pay, Texas licenses and how to get hired

Frisco and the rest of Collin County keep adding homes, HOAs, office campuses and sports fields, and every one needs mowing, planting and irrigation. Here is what landscaping crews earn and how to move up.

What landscaping workers earn

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median hourly wage of $18.82 (May 2025) for landscaping and groundskeeping workers. Tree trimmers and pruners earned a median of $24.50 an hour, and pesticide applicators $22.28. BLS projects 5% growth from 2025 to 2035, faster than average, with about 162,500 openings a year for grounds maintenance workers.

Texas licenses that raise your pay

  • No license to start: mowing, edging, planting and mulching need no license.
  • Pesticide applicator: applying weed and pest treatments for hire requires a license from the Texas Department of Agriculture (or structural pest work through its Structural Pest Control Service).
  • Irrigation: installing or repairing sprinkler systems for hire requires a TCEQ irrigator or irrigation technician license. Technicians work under a licensed irrigator.

What a Frisco crew day looks like

  • Early starts, often before 7 AM, to beat the heat.
  • Commercial and HOA routes with mowers, trimmers and blowers.
  • Planting, mulch and seasonal color installs in spring and fall.
  • Rain days and slower winters. Ask how hours hold up in January.

Questions to ask in the interview

  • Is pay hourly, and is there a raise path to crew lead?
  • Will you pay for a pesticide or irrigation license?
  • How many hours a week in winter?
  • Do I need my own transportation to the yard?
