Forklift and warehouse jobs in Dallas: pay, certification and how to get hired

Dallas is one of the biggest distribution hubs in the country, from the Southern Dallas County inland port to warehouses along I-35E and I-20. That means steady demand for forklift operators and warehouse crews. Here is what it pays and how to get on.

What forklift operators earn

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of $46,420 (May 2025) for industrial truck and tractor operators, the BLS category for forklift drivers. In warehousing and storage, the median for all material moving machine operators was $48,170. BLS projects about 70,700 openings a year nationwide for material moving machine operators, mostly to replace workers who leave.

Overnight and weekend shifts often pay a differential. Ask what it is before you accept.

Certification in plain words

  • OSHA rule: federal standard 29 CFR 1910.178 says employers must train and evaluate every forklift operator and certify that the training happened. There is no state forklift license in Texas.
  • Your employer certifies you: a card from an online course alone does not count until your employer evaluates you on their equipment.
  • Refresher training is required at least every three years, or after an accident or near miss.

What a Dallas warehouse shift looks like

  • Loading and unloading trailers, putting away pallets and pulling orders.
  • Sit-down forklifts, stand-up reach trucks and pallet jacks. Reach-truck experience often pays more.
  • Scanners and pick lists on every move.
  • Hot docks in summer, and peak-season overtime from October to December.

Questions to ask in the interview

  • Will you train and certify me on your equipment?
  • What is the shift differential for nights or weekends?
  • Is this a direct hire or through a temp agency, and when could I go permanent?
  • How much mandatory overtime is there in peak season?
