Commission sales careers: a practical guide

Outside sales can pay well and gives you independence. It also puts your income in your own hands. Here is how to tell if it fits you.

What the job looks like

Outside sales reps find prospects, meet them in person, present, negotiate and close. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that outside reps spend much of their time traveling to and visiting clients and prospective buyers, and that income and job security often depend directly on how much they sell.

What it pays

Occupation (BLS, May 2025)Median annual wage
Sales reps, wholesale & manufacturing (all)$76,460
…except technical & scientific products$72,080
…technical & scientific products$104,920
All occupations$50,980

For the non-technical group, the lowest 10% earned under $39,090 and the top 10% earned over $137,550. That spread is what commission does: results drive pay.

Who does well

  • Self-starters who keep activity high without a manager watching.
  • People who handle "no" without taking it personally.
  • Organized people who track every lead and follow up.

How to start

BLS notes a high school diploma is generally enough for non-technical products, and many companies train new reps on the job, often by ride-alongs with experienced reps. Look for employers that provide leads and ongoing training.

FAQ

Can you make a living on commission only?

Many reps do, but income varies with results. Ask the employer how pay is calculated, whether leads are provided, and what typical first-year reps earn.
